Hiya friends, I hope you’re all doing well! A couple of months ago, earlier in the year, I posted my top 20 anime endings list, and I figured I would come and present you with the anime openings! If you want to see my post on the anime endings, I’ll link it here.
Like last time, I will be posting which number each comes at, with 20 being the lowest and 1 being the best of all times along with a video if you are interested in hearing what each of my picks sounds like! I’ll also post below the video the song’s name and the artist and a short blurb on why I love it! So with that out of the way, let’s get into it!
20. Hitsugi no Chaika OP 1
This was the first anime I watched after my anime burnout after I got back into anime at my college friends’ insistence. It was one of the first things I’d picked out in a while and though it took me a longer amount of time to finish it than usual, I did, and I fell in love with this opening!
I just love how it starts out slow and eventually builds up with some really grungy-sounding guitar. It has a lot of intrigue and just makes you wanna bop! It actually also really conveys a lot about Chaika’s backstory and about the anime as a whole, which I like a lot! It’s got great symbolism! But other than that, it’s just a really solid song!
Besides being one of my favorite anime of all time from my old anime days, it has one of the best openings I’ve heard. It evokes such a sense of nostalgia as well as sadness in a way that’s elegant. It completely describes the anime and the protagonist’s morals. And the line, “After all, we’re all just travelers.” Just strikes such a chord with me! Very emotional for me to listen to this as well, haha! But I just love it!
This was the last anime I was watching before my anime burnout. As a result, I never finished this show. I only finished the first season and got 5 episodes in the second season. It sucks because this show is really good, but I never got to finish it. One day I will write about it here!
But this opening guys? Even though it’s technically not the definition of hype for a lot of people, it’s hype to me. It starts off pretty chill with some banging guitar, but as soon as the graphic of Chihaya slapping the card comes in, I have to mimic her and jam out to the rest of the song, because it’s brilliant! I don’t know what the other openings sound like but I doubt it’d trump this one because it’s so fun to listen to!
17. High School DxD NeW OP 1
RIP to the age restriction, but go listen to it! It’s a straight banger!
This is a show I watched when I first got into anime because sigh a guy I liked liked this show. Should’ve been a red flag, but whatever. It only had two seasons out at the time, so I watched both. And as I fell out of anime, two new seasons aired. So I need to get back and finish it. I did rewatch the first season and part of the second season with my best friend, but I don’t think she was too into it.
That being said, this opening is just 100% hype, no fax, only printer. No, but for real? The hype for this song just keeps growing as it goes on and I know every single word. I can sing this song word for word. If that doesn’t tell you my enthusiasm, I don’t know what will!
If you asked me back in 2014 what placement it would be at, probably be like #2. But with my expanding tastes and other shows I’ve seen, it’s sadly dropped down 15 places. Yikes. But I still really love it!
16. Dragon Ball English OP
Unfortunately, this anime follows a trend the last two anime did, which is I never finished it. I think back then when I started this, circa 2014, I didn’t want to commit to a very long series and I dropped it. Insert a laughing clip of me now after I’ve finished Bleach and Naruto. I will get back to it someday!
But Dragon Ball is such a fun show, and the English version of this really complimented it well. A banger of a song. Though I haven’t heard the Japanese, I feel like I will disown it in the same manner I disown the Japanese version of the Ouran opening: not as good as the English because it’s already cemented a place in my heart.
15. Ben To
Another show I watched when I first became an anime fan! This anime is such a hype banger, hype enough to go with the wacky plot of people fighting over half-priced bento in a grocery store and having a culture around it. I think it just fit the show so well and I get really excited when I hear this opening. It brings me back!
14. Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Another one of those shows I saw way back when!
Such a cute and simple song, yet it’s so nostalgic to me not because it sounds that way, but because I saw it almost a decade ago. I won’t say it fits the show per se, but I will say it captures what you’re expecting almost exactly by its use of the cutesy song and graphics. And by listening to the ending you know what you’re in for, hopefully.
I just really love the song. I’ll be saying that a lot!
This pick might be controversial to most, who rant and rave over the After Story ending. But, I liked this one better.
Not only is it the original introductory song to the visual novel, but I think it’s good for me because it’s more upbeat and happy, which are the kind of songs I tend to gravitate towards. That’s not to say After Story’s ending is bad, I also like that one, but this one just pulls on my heart a little bit more! Not only that, but it’s super hype to me for some reason when it goes into the character introductions in the visuals. Kinda like a drop? I don’t know!
Coupled with the fact that I watched this again in my early anime phase as a teenager, it carries nostalgia. Understandably so!
12. Code Geass OP 1
This is probably my most normie pick out of my entire list, but can you really blame me? This song is a masterpiece!
Though overall I think my favorite opening has to be opening 4, you just can’t deny that this song brings the nostalgia and the hype! Every opening with Lelouch riding a horse in it is the best. A theory that is tested and proven, ladies gents, and pals!
I watched this anime with my best friend about 2 years ago for the first time, and due to that, we meme’d the hell out of “Jibun wo” not only on our own but through the power of the internet. It’s always more fun to watch anime with pals after all! It was my first time seeing it and she already had, but it was still fun nonetheless. So it was pretty magical seeing what it was all about with this banger. So it has that attachment to it as well!
11. Gakuen Alice
The amount of hype I experience for this song is probably overkill, but I don’t care. I treat this song like it’s the most hype song to ever exist when in reality it’s such a cutesy song to pair very well with an anime that stars elementary kids with powers.
I watched this anime again, way back when, but it still has a special place in my heart. Couple the nostalgia with the banger that this is, the addictive cheerleading choreography Mikan does at the beginning and end, and me clapping to the part where Mikan runs and there are portraits of other characters? Grounds for a favorite opening of all time right there. I love it!
10. Uta no Prince-Sama OP 1
Unfortunately this song is pitched due to YouTube-sama saying “no, you can’t post this without getting copyright claimed.” But do listen to the full version of this. It should be on both Spotify & Apple Music! And if you wanna check out the MV, it’s up too!
This show was one of the Anime News Network free trial episodes on a cable deal they had going on back in 2014, and due to that, it has a special place in my heart! Not to mention that it was the first reverse harem I ever saw and it got me hooked! I recently rewatched the show and it still held up as well!
Every anime opening Mamoru Miyano ever sings is a banger, I swear. Canon, which is the opening for the second season is also good, but Orpheus Heart? Slaps for no fucking reason. A reverse harem anime doesn’t necessarily need a banger opening but we were eating good here. Can’t recommend this song enough!
9. Soul Eater OP 1
I’m just gonna say it. Resonance is better than Black Paper Moon. And I’m not even sorry about it.
Soul Eater is my favorite Shonen anime and manga of all time! It had to appear on this list, c’mon guys! I love this song though. It’s the perfect amount of hype and captures the weird as fuck vibe that this show portrays so well! The graphics are also sick, loved to imitate them a lot when I was watching it. And when it switched to Black Paper Moon I was so sad, but still jammed to that.
I just wanted to make it clear that this is a Resonance supremacy zone, that’s all.
8. Dororo OP 1
After hyping this opening up as one of my favorite anime openings of all time in my post about Dororo, which you can find here, you know I eventually had to make the post!
When I first started this show, I went into it thinking I wasn’t going to like it, but as soon as I heard this opening, I felt super optimistic. I watched it during my weekly anime watches when I used to do those. But this song? So great! The way it suspends you in the beginning when you start the song with those timed silences? Holy crap. And just the song’s structure as a whole keeps you guessing and getting hype as it goes along. I love it so much!
7. Great Teacher Onizuka OP 1
I don’t trust people who don’t like this song.
I watched this anime 2 summers ago and I didn’t regret it. It’s one of my favorites!
All jokes aside, I genuinely don’t understand how you can watch this anime and ever skip this opening! It’s the perfect amount of chillness with the vocals in the verses and then hypes with the chorus that you just want to croon out the lyrics to! And that guitar? Straight nasty!
6. Visual Prison
My god. This song? There’s nothing bad in this song. When it comes to vocals from the voice actors, instrumental, and visuals? Everything is a 10/10. Just like this anime. Don’t believe what MAL says.
I need to make a post on this show! I’ve been saying this for so long! But it’s coming, don’t you worry! I love this show, it’s one of my favorites, and it was probably the most slept-on anime airing in the Fall 2021 season. Because I was so busy with my last semester of college, I watched it after I graduated and I legitimately could not pause to watch anything else. I binged it for a whole day. I rarely do that with shows now. It was just so good! The music is superb, especially this opening. So hype and singable!
5. Kamigami no Asobi
If you read the anime ending post I made and saw the Kamigami no Asobi ending appear there and remember that I said it had the best combination of opening and ending for every anime I’ve ever seen? Then you would’ve known it would be here.
This song is just a straight banger. Every person I’ve ever shown it to, minus one guy who likes to mansplain to me about how every song ever sounds “generic” (he’s wrong anyways), has loved it. What’s not to love!? Interchanging vocals from different voice actors, superb animation for the visuals, and a banger of an instrumental? C’mon now. No way this isn’t in my top 5!
4. D.N Angel
If you read the first post I ever made on this blog, which was on D.N. Angel, you would know the story of why this opening is so iconic! If you haven’t, I’ll link the post here so you can read the glorious backstory of why I ever went to watch it! All of the information is underneath the “The Origin Story” heading.
But besides that, this opening is just amazing. And honestly, it would be my number 1 if not for the next three picks. It’s just that good. If 2.3 million views on YouTube don’t tell you anything, I don’t know what will!
3. Death Note OP 1
Again, I don’t care what anyone says. The WORLD is LEAGUES better than What’s Up People. Fight me for it.
Besides the fact that Nightmare is already an amazing J-rock band, this anime is also amazing. Two W’s make a gigantic, insurmountable W that is this opening. Not to mention this is the second anime I ever watched, so it has a special place in my heart. Not much else to say, the song speaks for itself!
2. Otome wa Boku ni Koishiteru
Unfortunately, this doesn’t have a YouTube video attached because no one’s ever posted one in the decade since I’ve seen it, but whatever!
It was one of the first anime I ever watched after the Anime News Network phase I had and it became one of my favorites instantly. I’ll need to do a rewatch of it since I’m now an adult and enjoy different things. I need to see if it holds up. But this opening? Holds up tremendously!
It’s definitely in the genre of songs I love the most: happy, upbeat, and nostalgic sounding. Besides that, it’s got great movements I like to mimic and very catchy English lyrics you can memorize pretty easily! I love this song a lot and if you managed to track it down, W for you!
1. Mythical Detective Loki Ragnarok
I put the full version of the song here because it just…needs to be listened to fully IMO.
This song is probably the most unlike the whole list because it starts out brooding, slow, and methodical. I honestly didn’t appreciate this song until I listened to it every episode for 26 episodes, which is how long the anime spanned. And even then, it took me a while to realize that hey, this is my favorite anime opening. I watched this show again after the Anime News Network phase and it quickly became one of my favorites. I need to rewatch it to see if it holds up, but this opening still is my favorite after all these years.
For fuck’s sake, I used it as a theme song for one of the characters I roleplayed! That’s how seriously I loved this song! It still gives me goosebumps and as one commenter put in the comments that I entirely agree with: “This is possibly one of the best anime opening themes of all time. It’s so haunting that you don’t even need to know what’s being said to be drawn right in to listen to it over and over again.”
And there we go! Both of my opening and ending lists have been posted on this blog! I have other entries other than a top 20, I have done 100, so if you want those, I can post them as well! Let me know! And let me know your top openings of all time, too!
I hope you have a good day/night/morning/evening/afternoon or whatever time it is for you that you’ve stumbled across this post. Thank you so much for checking out my blog! Much love!
